We recently met with favourite swimwear designer, and inspiration to many Melissa Odabash. Having dressed a wealth of celebrities in her famous designs, avid fans include Cheryl Cole (is she still using that surname?!), Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, Beyonce Knowles, Cameron Diaz, Sienna Miller and style icon Kate Moss, Melissa gave us an insight into what makes her tick, tips for the party season and trend predictions for next season.
VS: Have you always wanted to be a Fashion Designer?
MO: I wanted to be 4 things – singer, model, actress and a fashion designer. I can’t sing, so I skipped that. I did model, but I’m not photogenic. I am an amazing actress and am just waiting for the right role, so I am a fashion designer.
VS: Why Swimwear?
MO: I modelled mostly swimwear all the time and hated everything they put me in. Back then it was all about Hawaiian prints, bright colours and little fabric, so I decided to do a simple solid line.
VS: Do you have any top tips for the party season?
MO: Yes. A black dress will get you far, it can last for years and can be worn to the office party. Also, do a lot of your Christmas shopping online early as so much gets sold out quickly. Most online brands also offer free gift wrapping so its definitely worth it.
VS: Home or Holiday for Christmas?
MO: My other house, which is in Florida, is heaven. Even though I love a white Christmas, I also love the beach after we have unwrapped our gifts. I need to test out my bikinis sometimes!
VS: Are you a sweet or savoury girl?
MO: Both. I love Chocolate and I love Walkers.
VS: Do you prefer luxe or high street?
MO: I prefer luxe because I know it will last and not be a trend, so definitely worth the investment. That said, I do dip into the high street for basics.
VS: Most wanted item of the moment?
MO: Prada luggage. Even just the wheelie bag as I travel non-stop.
VS: Top five products / brands?
MO: Fashion has to be Melissa Odabash, beauty is Vita Liberata Self Tanner, food is Honestly Healthy – its the best organic food! My favourite drink is Green Tea.
VS: What trends do you predict for next season?
MO: As I just got back from Hong Kong and Paris, animal prints are always in – bright orange, colbalt blue in crochet. For Ready-to-Wear one shoulder dresses, textured fabrics and metallics.
