Happy New Year to you all!
To start off 2012 we thought we would get some hints and tips from our favourite coiffer and hairdresser to our very own Princess, the award-winning Richard Ward. Based in Chelsea, Richard has the most luxurious salon we have EVER visited, it is simply the only place to go for some ultra indulgent pampering.
VS: Have you always wanted to be a hairdresser?
RW: No – I always wanted to do something artistic but if I hadn’t been a hairdresser I’d have loved to be an architect. I love interiors. I became a hairdresser by accident rather than design but it’s been a very happy accident!
VS: What do you think is the key to your success?
RW: I’m a grafter – I’m very ambitious but I’m not afraid of hard work. I’ve handled such responsibility from such a young age, I think that prepares you very well for the future, especially working for yourself. Meeting Hellen helped too! (Richard’s wife Hellen handles all the business elements of the salon).
VS: Do you have any top tips for party hair?
RW: Women need a cut that will take them from desk to dance floor. Get your stylist to show you some quick tips to transform your look from day to evening. Keep some refreshing products at work or in your handbag – a spritz of my Optimiser Style Reviver (Richard Ward Couture Hair) is great for re-styling in a flash.
VS: Were you at Home or Holiday for Christmas?
RW: Home. By the time Xmas Eve comes we practically limp over the finishing line. While everyone else is winding down in December we’re gearing up, so Christmas at home and with my children is just what the doctor ordered. I love going to my home in Spain in January when it’s deserted but the sun is shining (if you’re lucky), but this year we’re moving house in Jan so it will have to wait!
VS: Are you a sweet or savoury guy?
RW: Both! I’m addicted to peanuts and cashew nuts. I literally could eat them forever – but I’m very partial to Dairy Milk and Jelly Snakes too. They’re my guilty pleasures but I’m a foody at heart. My brother is a chef and my parents were restauranteurs and hoteliers so it must be genetic.
VS: Do you prefer luxe or high street?
RW: Luxe – Prada is great, David Mayer Naman is my absolute wardrobe staple. I like Kenzo too.
VS: Most wanted item of the moment?
RW: A Belstaff jacket for my motorbike.
VS: Top five products / brands?
RW: Cote brasseries. We must go to our local Parsons Green one twice a week. Both from a business perspective, and as a customer, I rate them so highly. They are brillaint value for money and the standard is amazing (Richard Caring – the Ivy – so what do you expect?)
Bombay Sapphire gin – I’m very partial to a gin and tonic and this is the ultimate.
The Corinthia Hotel off Whitehall – very stylish and sure to become very iconic.
Pret a Manger – I admire their success and entrepreneurialism very much.
Franck Muller watches are always on my wish list.
VS: What trends do you predict for next season?
RW: Long Hair –glossy, tumbling locks, As worn by: The Duchess of Cornwall, Elle Macpherson and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
Mid-length Hair – the grown-up bob, as worn by: Olivia Palermo, Jessie J and Ferne Cotton.
Short Hair – the grown-up crop, as worn by: Emma Watson and Hayden Panettiere.
Fringes, as worn by: Jessie J, Jennifer Lopez.
