Celebrating 175 years this year and famous for their stylish packaging and its luxurious contents, this week Veruca Salt adds Hermès to our Iconic Brands.
Founded in Paris back in 1837 by Thierry Hermès, the label was initially famous for its equestrian sporting goods, harnesses and saddles. As its reputation grew worldwide, it was Thierry Hermès’ grandchildren Adolphe and Émile-Maurice who took over from their father and were responsible for renaming the company Hermès Frères.
It was Émile who took the brand to new levels after he secured exclusive rights to use the ‘zipper’ for leather clothing and accessories; a first for France. Swiftly following this, things fast developed for the brand: they introduced the first leather jacket with zipper in 1918 and the first leather handbags in 1922.
But it wasn’t until the mid 30s that Hermès produced some of its most recognisable items: the leather Sac à dépêches (made world famous 21 years later by an image of Grace Kelly in Life Magazine), and the iconic Hermès carrés (scarves). The scarves proved so popular that within a decade an entire factory was devoted to their production!
The brand further went on to introduce some of the most coveted items in the world, such as their ties, perfume, beach towels and even crystal and porcelain tableware, and were regularly commissioned to make items for the rich & famous, royalty & high society.
Today Hermès has over 14 divisions including men and women’s wear, jewellery and footwear and still hold strong with elite craftsmanship and instantly recognisable designs.“Leather, sport, and a tradition of refined elegance.” – Émile-Maurice, Hermès.
