In need of some hair TLC before the summer hits and we jet off on mini breaks and holidays in the sun, Veruca Salt had the pleasure of catching up with the talented Joel Silverman from leading Mayfair salon Jo Hansford. A firm favourite with clients, celebrities (The Saturday’s, Leona Lewis and Jade Ewen are all fans) and TV producers (Joel has worked on both Britain’s Next Top Model & X-Factor), it doesn’t take long to see why this Senior Stylist is in such high demand. Here Joel gives us a glance into his history, aspirations and if he would rather be an international agent or party boy…
VS: Have you always wanted to be a hairdresser?
JS: When I was at school I wanted to be a chef but after realising I couldn’t work those unsociable hours I knew it wasn’t for me. I met a stylist at the age of 16 who talked me into wanting to be a hairdresser – I took a chance on it and here I am now at one of the top salons in Mayfair!
VS: What do you think is the key to your success?
JS: I think the key is to be completely normal and the same with people regardless of status or what jobs they do. Everyone is the same but some have different more high profile jobs and most celebrities just want to feel relaxed. It’s also important to keep everything discussed confidential and never share a secret.
VS: What are your top tips for summer hair care?
JS: If you’re going away to find some sun try to use some leave-in conditioner, preferably one with UV protection in it. Alternatively, you could use an intensive treatment masque and leave it on all day.
VS: Great Gatsby or James Bond?
JS: I think if I’m choosing actors I’d much rather be Leo… If I’m choosing characters what guy wouldn’t want to be James Bond?!
VS: Are you a sweet or savoury guy?
JS: Definitely savoury! I get stick from everyone at work because I eat well and am not a massive fan of chocolate or cake…I’d much rather a cheese board for dessert!
VS: Do you prefer luxe or high street?
JS: I would love to say high street but I’m a semi-snob when it comes to clothes – I basically shop in Reiss or Ralph Lauren. I do mix it with a few high-end pieces, but the problem I find with men’s stuff from the high street is that you can end up looking like the mannequin from Topman!
VS: Top five products / brands?
JS: In terms of hair products Kerastase has just brought out a new styling range that I’m a big fan of as they’re not too heavy and you can build them up, the mouses and Spray-à-Porter are very nice. My favourite oil based product is the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolute. In terms of men’s products you can’t go wrong with Fudge.
I’m really into my watches too, so in terms of brands you can’t look past Rolex – ultimate luxury and not over the top flash. I also love my Panerai.
As a global brand you have to admire what Apple do, they reinvent themselves and have the best marketing around. I feel marketing is probably the most important thing in any business.
VS: If you could use only one summer hair product what would it be?
JS: It would be a toss up between the Jo Hansford Leave-In Conditioner for when you’re on the beach or the Kerastase Spray-à-Porter.
VS: What hair trends do you see emerging for the summer?
JS: It’s still hard to predict if we’re going to have a summer in England – its May and I’m still in a jumper!! But I’d expect when the festival season hits for hair to be either long flowing locks, quite natural like a beach wave or with girls opting for different kinds of braids and plaits. The fishtail plait is still very popular.
