Alfred Hitchcock’s Inspiring town

Cornwall is a place I have only ever visited a couple of times, mainly in the summer where you most certainly can’t get a real feel for the area due to the flocks of tourists, sailors and surfing enthusiasts that make the journey down.

So the VS team decided to take a few days away from the big smoke to visit the picturesque harbour town of Fowey in October, allowing us to mingle with the locals and to experience a more relaxed side to Cornish life.

The train is the most pleasant way to travel and First Great Western offer an hourly service to PAR, the nearest station to Fowey, from Paddington. Of course, being lovers of all things nice, there was no better way to start our journey than with a glass of champagne and some open salmon sandwiches at the Champagne Bar in Paddington Station.

Happily fed and watered, we jumped into our first class carriage and went on our merry way.

5 hours later, after a post lunch snooze we arrived at our destination. Our home for the night was a recently opened boutique hotel in the centre of Fowey called Upton House. Offering both glamour and class, not to mention all the mod cons, this was a perfect base!

Our days were spent out in the fresh air, strolling through the majestic countryside or on tiny boats crossing the harbour. You can actually picture the scene as The Birds, made famous on the big screen by Alfred Hitchcock, was actually inspired by this very town. The original author Daphne du Maurier lived just outside of Fowey, and was inspired by the vast amount of gulls and crows that littered this quaint area.

We couldn’t leave without experiencing the infamous Cornish cream tea, and were advised that Fowey Hall offered the best in the area. We were not disappointed. The scones were warm and light, the clotted cream just right and all topped off with a dollop of strawberry jam. I just wish I could have finished two!

  1. Cannot believe you went to Fowey. You forgot to mention the many boutique shops and pubs though. Still good to have us on here 🙂
