Inspired by Wimbledon, which seems like a lifetime ago now, Veruca Salt finally took the plunge and booked in some tennis lessons!!
Having only ever really played the sport at school, bar the odd knock around with an ex-boyfriend who hit the ball WAY to hard for it to be enjoyable, the first lesson was scheduled in with a fair amount of trepidation. What if I couldn’t hit the ball, or get it over the net?!
Thankfully, I had the help of a dear friend, one who used to play professionally (which didn’t ease the worry), but nonetheless, it was great to have him on board for the fun of it and to test my limits.
The first lesson was hard, for us both, as sooooo much has changed since I was taught at school. For one, the forehand grip has been adapted for smoother contact with the ball – it takes ages to get your head around it and it feels totally alien at first. Check out the grip and example below…
Whilst it looks odd and is somewhat uncomfortable to begin with, once you get the hang of it it’s fantastic. Backhand, on the other-hand, is a whole other story which I am still trying to master – eek!
A few weeks in now, with 2 1-hour lessons under my belt and a couple more hours of practice in, my love for this sport is starting to come back. Now is the perfect weather to play, especially in the morning when its a little fresher – it’s a great way to get your heart rate up too and an excellent excuse to have a catch up with a friend.
We played at Lincoln’s Inn Tennis Court, but there are plenty around. The My Local Pitch site is great for finding a court near you and now that the summer is over, availability should be much better.
As for me, I will continue the lessons and practice games, so watch this spot for my place at Wimbledon next year 🙂
